Everything you do is touched by engineering, all day every day. From phones and cars to water supplies or buildings, engineers are essential to keeping everyday life on track. We offer a full range of degrees that covers seven broad areas of engineering. All courses meet professional standards and our highly desirable graduates are employed all over the world.

Professional facilities

Engineering facilities at USW are second to none. There are dedicated workshops, specialist suites for electronic engineering and robotics, and an Aerospace Centre with wind tunnels and a BAE Jetstream 31 aircraft. 

Our specialist facilities mean that you’ll have hands-on access to industry-standard equipment, preparing your for the workplace when you graduate.

We also provide activities outside the classroom to enhance your learning and to work with students from other subject areas. There’s the opportunity to take part in Formula Student, building a race car to compete against other universities, while the USW Rocketry Society has designed, built and successfully launched rockets reaching 3,000ft – winning the National Rocketry Championship.

 

Faculty of Computing, Engineering and Science (FCES) Travel Bursary

The FCES travel bursary is for any University of South Wales student studying a relevant undergraduate sandwich degree in the Faculty of Computing, Engineering and Sciences (FCES).

Worth £500, this one off, non means tested bursary is given to all students starting their sandwich year as part of their FCES degree course. The bursary is intended to provide financial support towards your travel costs to and from your sandwich placement.

Aerospace Engineering

Aerospace Engineering

Our Aerospace Centre on campus puts practical skills at the centre of your student experience. We’ve got two aircraft hangars with a BAE Jetstream 31 and a Jet Provost aircraft, Rolls Royce Spey engines and wind tunnels.

USW is the only university in the UK that has integrated the industry-standard aircraft maintenance engineering qualification ‘EASA Part 66’ with an Honours degree, delivered on a single campus. This means you’ll gain an aircraft maintenance licence with just two years’ professional experience instead of five. 

Our Aeronautical Engineering course is accredited by the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), which reflects the industry standards that are built in to enhance your career prospects. 

Automotive Engineering

Automotive Engineering

Electrical vehicles are set to dominate the automotive industry in the next two decades. Our courses have been designed with these technological developments in mind and works towards career opportunities in this emerging market.

With a focus on autonomous vehicle technology, you’ll learn about the electrical and mechanical aspects of vehicles to be ready for the automotive industry of tomorrow.

Our four-year MEng course is a great route for students who want to become registered Chartered Engineers because it meets the Engineering Council’s educational requirements to gain Chartered Engineer (CEng) status: the highest standard within the industry. You’ll also have the chance to be involved in the development of a formula student racing car as part of your studies.

Built Environment

Built Environment

If you enjoy the challenge of practical problems and want to be at the heart of construction projects, a career in quantity surveying, building surveying or project management may be what you’re looking for. 

USW is the largest provider of industry-accredited surveying courses and project management courses in Wales. Our degrees in project management and quantity surveying are fully accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) – the world’s leading professional body in land, property, construction and associated environmental issues. Successful completion of one these courses is the first step to gaining RICS professional membership, which can boost your career prospects and salary.

Our degrees are based on the requirements of the sector. We work closely with professional bodies and employers to ensure our courses reflect industry practice and that graduates have relevant skills. As well as undertaking live projects and having the option to spend a year in the workplace as part of your degree, you’ll learn how to use industry-standard engineering software such as MS Project, Revit, AutoCAD, CostX, and Navisworks.

Your studies here won’t confine you to a classroom. We don’t believe you can learn key skills like analytical decision making and problem solving by just reading about them, so we offer practical activities that help you understand and apply the theory you learn in lectures.

Civil Engineering

Civil Engineering

Civil engineering is about people. From supplying energy and clean water, to processing and recycling our waste, civil engineers develop services and facilities we need every day. We will train you for a career in this field through a combination of theory, practice and industry experience.

Our degrees are accredited by multiple professional bodies, which demonstrates that what you learn relates directly to industry standards. All graduates have the full educational basis for professional development to become an Incorporated Engineer (IEng). Our BEng award is also partially accredited for Chartered Engineer (CEng), while our MEng award fully meets the educational base to become a Chartered Engineer (CEng).

Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical Engineering

Our degrees have been accredited by the IMechE and the Energy Institute. This is an industry recognition to show that they meet the highest standard of education and provide a route to achieving Chartered Engineer status after you graduate.

USW has strong links with major international industries such as EON, EDF, Doosan Power Systems, Tata Steel, Airbus, and GDF Suez. We work closely with them to ensure that our courses are relevant and challenging. Our facilities are industry standard too – we have our own augmented reality welding training simulator, flight simulator, wind tunnels and gas turbine plant.

Accreditation also means you can gain free professional membership of the IMechE. Benefits include access to online resources and invitations to local and national events, which can help you start to build your career before you even graduate.

Electrical and Electronic Engineering

Electrical and Electronic Engineering

We prepare students for a career developing modern electrical and electronic systems for the next generation of products. 

Our industry-standard facilities help you make this transition from the classroom to employment. We have three suites dedicated to electrical and electronic engineering: a general electronics lab, the power and renewable energy lab, and an embedded systems lab that was designed with our sponsor, Renesas – the world’s leading supplier of microcontrollers. This sponsorship means our students learn using the latest technologies and development tools.

Our courses are accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), which will help you become a professionally qualified Chartered Engineer after you graduate. Your studies will combine technical engineering with management and business skills, with a balance between theory and practice.
