Nursing and Midwifery
Clinical Simulation On Campus
Students prepare for practice in our Simulation Centre. It emulates hospital and community settings to provide hands-on training in role-play scenarios. Here, you’ll deal with everything from essential clinical skills to complex, multidisciplinary clinical scenarios. You’ll use the same equipment you will find in healthcare settings, and depending on the scenario, you’ll work with actors and patient simulators that mimic the body’s reaction to illness, care and treatment.
Part of the Centre is dedicated to teaching midwifery and childcare skills. We have advanced birthing and maternal simulators that imitate various stages of pregnancy, and related scenarios that include birth, and breech presentations.
Supervised Placements and Support
50% of your studies will take place in clinical practice – you’ll work with real-life clients and patients alongside practitioners to become work-ready.
We work closely with Health Board practice partners and independent providers across Wales to provide varied placement opportunities. You’ll be expected to go on placements in a number of local health boards that last several weeks at a time, in a range of locations.
On placements, you’ll work alongside registered practitioners to care for service users with multiple and complex care needs. You’ll be assigned a mentor and be supported throughout each placement. Nursing and midwifery students enjoy exceptional support at USW. Our open door policy ensures there is always someone on hand to assist you if a problem arises and this is something our students really appreciate.
Professional Qualification
USW is an NMC Approved Education Institution (AEI). Graduates from our courses in Midwifery and Nursing can apply to join the NMC professional register and start to practise in the UK.
Our degrees provide the right mix of knowledge, skills and experience to prepare you for the challenges of modern healthcare. Employers are keen to recruit our graduates because they know they are well-prepared, confident, competent and safe practitioners.
We offer degrees in all four branches of Nursing, with courses starting in September and April each year. You can qualify as a nurse through different routes at USW, not just full-time undergraduate degrees. We also offer a flexible part-time nursing course, which gives experienced healthcare support workers (HCSWs) an opportunity to become a Registered Nurse while still working and earning. Or if you already have a degree, you could qualify by studying a two-year Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing.
